In the 1930s, and far after that, Ford and Chevrolet were embroiled in a battle for supremacy in the American car market. We’ll cover the El Camino’s specs throughout the years and its overall history which turned it into one of the most well-known American cars ever made. In this guide, we cover the famous El Camino, complete with all of its odd and charming characteristics. It would be a while before the El Camino was a commercial success too, with the Ranchero outselling the El Camino by a significant margin until the El Camino’s second and third generations. The El Camino came much further down the line and was really just an attempt to encroach on the unique market that Ford had created with the Ranchero.

While Ford’s Utility Coupe is widely considered the first production ute, there were examples of the car/truck formula earlier than that, just not in full production. That changed in the mid-1930s, when Ford Australia built the first production “ute,” which combined the small form factor of a coupe with the read bed of a pickup truck. Cars were made for driving and trucks were meant for trucking. At that time, cars were designed for an explicit purpose and typically only worked for that specific purpose. In the early 1930s, cars were only starting to become good and properly usable. A copy that got more popular than the original. In fact, the El Camino is a bit of a fluke. The funny thing is that the Chevy El Camino wasn’t an American idea, despite it becoming a cultural icon. Tucked somewhere near the top is the Chevrolet El Camino.

That list would start with the Corvette and end with the Ford Raptor. So you know it's the one for you. There is an unquestionable short list of unique American cars. Lets not forget this is an original Freemont, CA built car.
1969 EL CAMINO SS PICTURES MANUAL
And because an SS is meant to be driven, it has easy driving features, like power steering and power brakes with discs up front.Ĭomplete with owner's manual and previous CA title documentation, this is a highly optioned El Camino SS that has been given a proper restoration. All this power gets to the ground through GM's sturdy TH400 three-speed automatic transmission (that's believed to be original to this Chevy) on its way to the stout 12-bolt rear end. It fires up nicely as the four-barrel carburetor feeds the mighty motor. The bright block, tidy hoses, shining valve covers, and air topper with callout all make this look quite nice. And that's because you're going to be showing it all off soon after you tell people this is the numbers-matching 396 cubic-inch big block. Under the hood is a motor that's ready to showcase. Plus, there are well-integrated worthwhile upgrades like the retro-style AM/FM digital tuner, auxiliary gauge trio, and cold-blowing R134a air conditioning. You get nice classic elements like the SS dual-spoke steering wheel, round gauge package w/tach, and horseshoe shifter in the center console. And those bucket seats are both taut and look correct, right down to the button-top seatbacks. The door panels, dash, headliner, and much more feel quite fresh.

The interior is exactly what you want to see: a well restored presentation in a deep black. Plus, there's great details everywhere, from the classic chrome bumpers, to the upgraded tonneau cover. The double power bulge hood, blacked-out grille, proper SS badging, and Mag-style wheels make for an awesome Super Sport. That's also why it has crisp SS-specific details, like the full-length sport stripe that looks like an almost unbroken line on this well-done body. It's a true Super Sport, which everyone loves to see. And you can exactly understand why there would the time, effort, and care in a classic like this.

Fathom Green is the factory-correct color, but it has the deep tone that only comes from a good modern application. That's why the paint provides an instant attraction. There was a full frame-off restoration done on this El Camino in 2003, and when you pay for quality, it lasts. As you dig deeper, you also see the value that comes from a frame-off restoration later in life that not only invested in quality, but also desirable features, like A/C. This 1969 Chevrolet El Camino SS has its numbers-matching big block and original colors inside & out. #'S MATCHING 396 BB V8, TH400, ORIGINAL FATHOM GREEN,COLD A/C, ORIGINAL CA CAR!
